Woman Jailed for Covering Up Burglary

A Timber Lake woman has been sentenced to 18 months of probation for her role in covering up a burglary at a local business. Stephanie Vandervier, 28, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on November 4, 2013.

The conviction stems from a January 6, 2013, break-in at the Chatter Box Corner Café and Bar, a downtown business in Timber Lake. Vandervier had knowledge that the burglary was committed and concealed the same from tribal and federal authorities. The investigation was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division.

Vandervier was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 13, 2013, and pled guilty to a Superseding Information that charged her with Misprision of a Felony on August 19, 2013. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson.

As part of her sentence, Vandervier was ordered to pay $972.61 in restitution and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The sentence was handed down after Vandervier had already accepted responsibility for her actions.

The case serves as a reminder that those who aid and abet criminals can face serious consequences. Vandervier’s sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in bringing those who break the law to justice.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson praised the efforts of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson for their work on the case. ‘This case demonstrates the importance of working together to combat crime and protect our communities,’ Johnson said.

In a statement, Hanson added, ‘We are pleased that justice has been served in this case and that the community can feel safer knowing that those who aid and abet criminals will be held accountable.’
