A Lexington man has been slammed with a 78-month federal prison sentence after admitting to receiving thousands of images of child pornography. Xiang Wang, 32, was sentenced today by Chief U.S. District Judge Karen K. Caldwell, who also ordered him to serve 10 years of supervised release upon release from prison.
Wang pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of receipt of child pornography. Under federal law, he must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for release. The case marks another grim chapter in the ongoing federal crackdown on online exploitation of minors.
According to court records, the investigation began in September 2015 when a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force flagged an IP address linked to the distribution of child sexual abuse material. The digital trail led directly to Wang, who had made thousands of illicit images and videos available for download over peer-to-peer networks.
In December 2015, federal and state agents raided Wang’s Lexington residence. They seized a computer and two external hard drives that were later found to contain approximately 7,900 images of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The evidence was overwhelming and led to Wang’s swift admission of guilt.
The probe was jointly conducted by the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Kentucky State Police’s Electronic Crime Branch. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Marye prosecuted the case for the federal government, calling the material “graphic, illegal, and utterly deplorable.”
The sentencing was announced by Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; James M. Gibbons, Special Agent in Charge of HSI; and Richard W. Sanders, Kentucky State Police Commissioner. Wang must also register as a sex offender for life.
