Pittsburgh Restaurateur Charged with Harboring and Transporting Illegal Aliens
In a shocking indictment, Xing Zheng Lin, aka Steve Lin, age 44, of McKees Rocks, Pa., has been charged with harboring and transporting illegal aliens at his Saga Restaurants in Monroeville, Robinson, and Bethel Park.
The indictment, returned on Dec. 6, 2014, and unsealed today, accuses Lin of harboring and transporting illegal aliens from 2009 until January 10, 2014. According to the indictment, the aliens were employed at Lin’s restaurants.
Lin faces two counts of harboring and transporting illegal aliens, with a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison for each alien. This translates to a potential 20-year prison sentence. Lin also faces fines of $250,000 for each alien, or both.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
An indictment is an accusation, and Lin is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Assistant United States Attorney Shardul S. Desai is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
Lin’s Saga Restaurants have been a staple in the Pittsburgh area, but this indictment has raised serious concerns about the treatment and employment of undocumented workers. The case will continue to unfold in the coming weeks and months.
