Armed Robbery of Mail Carriers in Houston Lands Young Man Behind Bars

A disturbing trend has been plaguing the streets of Houston, with a string of armed robberies targeting mail carriers. The most recent development in this case involves a 20-year-old suspect who has been charged in connection with these heinous crimes.

Xzavier Ivar Shephard, a resident of Houston, Texas, has been indicted on charges of aiding and abetting interference with commerce by robbery. This serious offense carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in federal prison, as well as a mandatory minimum of seven years that must be served consecutively to any other prison term imposed.

According to the indictment, which was returned by a federal grand jury on November 5, 2023, Shephard was involved in at least four armed robberies of postal letter carriers since June. The alleged modus operandi involved a young male approaching letter carriers while they were engaged in the performance of their duties, displaying a gun and/or threatening force, and making demands for certain items.

The suspects would then retreat to a black Buick automobile with paper plates and flee the scene. Notably, the vehicle was registered to Shephard, according to the charges.

The investigation into these armed robberies was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard D. Hanes is prosecuting the case.

Shephard is expected to make his initial appearance via video before U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew M. Edison at 2 p.m. today. This development marks a significant step towards justice for the victims of these brazen crimes.
