SIOUX FALLS – A Yankton, South Dakota man has been handed a 22-year federal prison sentence for distributing fentanyl that led to serious bodily injury. Matthew Williams, aged 33, was convicted of Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and sentenced on July 7, 2025.
Williams’ crime spree began when he intentionally distributed a pill containing fentanyl to a drug customer, who ingested it and overdosed. Paramedics were called to the scene and managed to save the victim’s life by administering Narcan.
The incident took place on March 17, 2022, and Williams was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2023. He pleaded guilty on April 2, 2025, leading to today’s sentence. Alongside his prison term, Williams is required to serve four years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Sioux Falls Police Department. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth A. Ebert-Webb took the lead in prosecuting the defendant, ensuring justice for the victim.
Following his conviction, Williams was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he awaits transfer to a federal correctional facility.
