Detroit, MI – In a groundbreaking move against criminal organizations, five members of the notorious Young and Skantless (YNS) gang have been hit with federal racketeering charges, including murder, in what officials are hailing as a major victory for Detroit One.
The acting assistant attorney general, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, ATF special agent in charge, and Detroit’s police chief stood together to announce the indictment of Corey Toney, 36; Edward Tavorn, 30; Andre Chattam, 27; Kevin Pearson, 25; and Sontez Wells, 23.
The charges stem from a series of violent crimes committed by these alleged YNS members, including a murder, robberies that turned deadly, shootings, home invasions, arson, and drug distribution. According to the indictment, the gang has terrorized Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood with its ruthless tactics, intimidating both rival dealers and law-abiding citizens.
“The Young and Skantless gang is known for their wanton violence and disregard for human life,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Blanco. “This indictment is a testament to the power of collaborative efforts between local, state, and federal law enforcement.”
The charges are part of a larger initiative by the Detroit One program, which aims to reduce violent crime in Detroit through community engagement and coordinated law enforcement action. This latest case follows previous indictments against other notorious street gangs in the city.
“We will continue to target these violent criminals and hold them accountable for their actions,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel L. Lemisch. “Detroit deserves a safer future, and we are committed to making it happen.”
