Yoirlan Tome Rojas, a man from Storm Lake, Iowa, has been convicted of multiple counts of credit card fraud and identity theft. The conviction came after a three-day trial in federal court in Sioux City, where a jury deliberated for about one hour before returning the verdict.
Rojas was found guilty of two counts of using a counterfeit access device, one count of possession of fifteen or more counterfeit access devices, one count of money laundering, and two counts of aggravated identity theft. The evidence presented at trial showed that Rojas manufactured credit cards and used them to make purchases at Walmart and other businesses in the Storm Lake area.
The investigation revealed that Rojas would use the manufactured credit cards to purchase gift cards, which he would then use to make legitimate purchases. However, at least two of the credit cards used by Rojas belonged to individuals who had reported unauthorized use of their credit cards.
The case against Rojas was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jamie Bowers, and was investigated by the Storm Lake Iowa Police Department and the United States Secret Service.
