YORK, PA – In a major blow to Pennsylvania’s cocaine trade, 27-year-old Marcos Fernandez Rivera has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in a high-stakes trafficking operation.
Rivera, a resident of York, was convicted of conspiring and attempting to traffic cocaine after a lengthy investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Pennsylvania State Police. The evidence against him was damning, including the seizure of a parcel containing one kilogram of cocaine hidden inside a boardgame box.
According to prosecutors, Rivera was in direct communication with codefendant Gregory Ruiz Mercado, with whom he had been discussing other packages. Rivera’s guilty plea in the case was a significant victory for law enforcement, who had been working to dismantle a major cocaine trafficking ring in the region.
U.S. District Judge Christopher C. Conner imposed the 30-month sentence on Rivera, as well as a fine and special assessment. Rivera will also serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.
Rivera’s sentencing is just the latest development in the ongoing case against him and his co-defendant. In February, Ruiz Mercado was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in the conspiracy.
The case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and improving community safety. The initiative targets high-crime areas and works to build trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
