GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A YouTube-powered sting operation has led to the dismantling of a $65 million senior fraud ring, with twenty-eight alleged members facing federal charges. The ringleaders targeted thousands of elderly Americans, including a 97-year-old Holocaust survivor’s widow who lost her life savings.
In a coordinated nationwide sweep spanning California, New York, Texas, and Michigan, 25 suspects have been apprehended, all charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and money laundering. Federal agents seized over $4.2 million in assets and several luxury vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz G63, Porsche Panamera, and GMC Yukon Denali.
Operating since at least 2019 from Southern California, the ring was a multinational operation with Chinese nationals often operating under illegal status in the U.S., collaborating closely with India-based scam call centers. Scammers posed as technical support agents, government officials, or bank employees, using psychological manipulation to dupe seniors into wiring money they believed to be mistaken refunds.
Among the key figures was YouTuber Pierogi from ‘Scammer Payback,’ who, along with two other YouTubers from ‘Trilogy Media,’ documented evidence by confronting scammers and posting videos on their channels. Their work led directly to the identification of Zhiyi Zhang, Dudu Chen, and Huajian Chen, all named in the indictments.
During a sting operation, Pierogi was directed to send cash to ‘Hans Bum’ at a South San Francisco address. Trilogy Media delivered a decoy package, leading to the confrontation of Zhiyi Zhang. He admitted his involvement on camera, outing himself and his role in the scheme. Law enforcement then confirmed Zhang’s identity through video evidence and rental records.
This groundbreaking collaboration between YouTube influencers and law enforcement serves as a stark reminder that the fight against fraud is entering new frontiers, with citizen journalists playing a pivotal role in catching the culprits.
