Zachariah Luke, Meth Conspiracy, South Carolina 2023

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Zachariah Ryan Luke, 28, of Bennettsville, South Carolina, pleaded guilty today to a conspiracy that stretched from a South Carolina prison cell to the streets of Florida. Luke admitted to orchestrating the distribution of over 500 grams of methamphetamine while already serving time for prior drug offenses. He now faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 10 years, and potentially life, in federal prison.

The scheme, uncovered by a multi-agency task force, involved Luke using contraband cellphones to connect with an associate on the outside. According to court documents, in November 2021, Luke directed the delivery of approximately one kilogram of high-purity methamphetamine to a Florida-based dealer at a South Carolina department store. The dealer then attempted to transport the drugs to St. Augustine, Florida.

The operation quickly unraveled during a routine traffic stop. A St. Johns County deputy observed the dealer commit a traffic violation and attempted to pull him over. Instead of complying, the dealer allegedly sped off, leading authorities on a chase through a residential neighborhood. A police helicopter tracked the vehicle, witnessing the driver discarding a backpack before abandoning the car in a wooded area. Inside the backpack, deputies found 985.6 grams of crystal methamphetamine – confirmed by lab tests to be 100% pure.

The dealer’s attempt to ditch the drugs proved futile. He was apprehended after fleeing on foot. Simultaneously, South Carolina corrections officers raided Luke’s cell, confiscating multiple illegal cellphones. A forensic examination of those phones revealed a trove of text messages detailing the logistics of the drug operation, including supply sources and delivery instructions. The communications directly linked Luke to the methamphetamine shipment.

Investigators from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the South Carolina Department of Corrections, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, the Aiken Department of Public Safety, the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives all contributed to the investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Coolican.

This isn’t just about a drug bust; it’s a stark reminder that even behind bars, criminals are finding ways to operate. Luke’s ability to run a significant drug operation from prison highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organized crime and the need for increased vigilance in correctional facilities. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
