Muskogee, OK – A McAlester man has been sentenced to 96 months in prison for distributing a deadly synthetic opioid.
ZACHERY SCOTT KERNS, age 30, was handed down the harsh sentence by U.S. District Judge James H. Payne for his role in the distribution of fentanyl, a Schedule II controlled substance.
According to court documents, on or about December 4, 2014, KERNS knowingly and intentionally distributed a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl in the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
The investigation into KERNS’ activities was a collaborative effort between the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office, the District 18 Drug Task Force, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Hammer and Shannon Henson represented the government in the case.
KERNS will remain in custody pending transportation to a federal facility to begin serving his non-paroleable sentence.
The harsh punishment is a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl and the consequences of those who seek to profit from its sale.
