Zip Gun Convict Gets 7 Months Time Served
Nathaniel Bachelder, a 35-year-old Bloomington Prairie, Minnesota man, was sentenced to time served for possessing an unregistered destructive device – a homemade slam-type weapon known as a zip gun.
According to court records, Bachelder was traveling through Mt. Rushmore on December 14, 2014, when he was found to be in possession of the unregistered firearm.
The homemade zip gun consisted of two sections of pipe and was considered a destructive device by authorities.
Bachelder was indicted on March 17, 2015, and pleaded guilty on November 6, 2015.
He was sentenced on February 26, 2016, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken of the U.S. District Court to time served of approximately 7 months in federal custody, 3 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation into Bachelder’s crime was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case, bringing Bachelder to justice for his crime.
