Felon Fires at Deer
A McLaughlin man was sentenced to six months in custody for his role in a firearms offense, authorities said.
On April 29, 2013, U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann sentenced Jess Porras, 52, to 6 months in custody, 1 year of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment for Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Porras, a guide who was leading a group of hunters from Minnesota in December 2011, grabbed a rifle and shot a deer after a member of the party missed several shots. At the time, Porras was aware that he had previously been convicted of a felony and was prohibited from possessing firearms.
The conviction stems from an incident in which Porras, despite being a convicted felon, engaged in an activity that would put him in possession of a firearm. This egregious act has serious consequences.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which was the result of an investigation by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley prosecuted the case.
Porras is expected to self-report to the U.S. Marshal’s Service by 2:00 p.m. on May 21, 2013.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to laws and regulations, particularly for those with a history of felony convictions.
