Dirk Hugo, a 49-year-old man from Arlington Heights, IL, was found with a loaded handgun in his waistband and a bulletproof vest in a parking garage on May 1, 2024. This incident occurred just a month after he was involved in an assault at a Glenview, IL motel, where he allegedly struck a man’s head with a gun. Hugo, a previously convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was arrested and has remained in law enforcement custody since.
Hugo’s history of violent crime and refusal to give up his firearms despite being told he cannot possess a gun led to a jury conviction in federal court in Chicago. The conviction was for illegal possession of a firearm as a previously convicted felon.
On May 12, 2026, U.S. District Judge Martha M. Pacold sentenced Hugo to the statutory maximum of 15 years in federal prison. The sentence was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephanie C. Stern and Simar Khera argued that Hugo’s criminal record and violent tendencies make him a danger to the community. They stated that his refusal to give up his guns, combined with his disdain for the law, showcases an individual who is an extreme danger to the community.
