The grim headlines from Muskogee, Oklahoma bring us a heart-wrenching tale of child abuse and its grim consequences. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma has announced that Dakota Lane Williston, a 19-year-old resident of Idabel, was arraigned in federal court today.
Williston faces an unforgiving charge: Murder in the First Degree in Indian Country Committed During the Perpetration of Child Abuse. This heinous act is in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1111, 1151 and 1153. Should she be found guilty, Williston could face life imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $250,000.
The charges stem from an investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the McCurtain County Sheriff’s Office, and the Choctaw Nation Tribal Police. The alleged crime took place on July 23, 2013, in the Eastern District of Oklahoma, within Indian country.
According to the Indictment, Williston is accused of unlawfully killing Payton Cockrell, a two-year-old girl, during the perpetration of child abuse as defined by Title 18, United States Code, Section 1111(c)(3).
The hearing was presided over by Honorable Steven P. Shreder, Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, located in Muskogee. Williston has been remanded into the custody of the United States Marshal Service.
Assistant United States Attorney Dean Burris represented the United States during the arraignment. This case serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of child abuse and the consequences that follow when lives are tragically lost under such circumstances.
