Jerimyah Newton, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Pennsylvania 2020

PITTSBURGH, PA – The grimy streets of Pittsburgh are once again the scene of a federal indictment, as 19-year-old Jerimyah Newton has been charged with violating federal firearms laws. United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today that Newton is accused of illegal firearm possession after having been convicted of a crime carrying a sentence of more than one year.

The young defendant stands accused in a two-count indictment, which alleges that on or about April 10, 2020, and again on May 31, 2020, he possessed a firearm despite his prior criminal record. Federal law is clear: anyone with such a conviction is barred from owning a firearm or ammunition.

Should Newton be found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine upwards of $250,000, or both. His actual sentence would depend on the specifics of his offense and any prior criminal history. Currently, Newton remains behind bars as his case winds its way through the legal system.

Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan D. Lusty is the government’s lead prosecutor in this case. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conducted the investigation that led to Newton’s arrest, and this case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through targeted enforcement.

Project Safe Neighborhoods brings together various stakeholders to tackle the most pressing violent crime issues in local communities. It focuses on violent offenders while also working with prevention and reentry programs to create lasting reductions in crime rates. As for Newton, his case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of illegal firearm possession.

An indictment is merely an accusation. Jerimyah Newton is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
