A cunning scheme to defraud the federal government has landed a Georgia woman in hot water. Dyann E. Ramo, a 66-year-old resident of Canton, Georgia, has been sentenced to three years of probation, including a year of home confinement, for embezzling $196,000 in Social Security benefits.
According to investigators, Ramo’s mother, Virginia, had been receiving retirement benefits from the Social Security Administration since 1999. However, when Virginia passed away, Ramo took steps to conceal her death and continued to collect the benefits for nearly two decades. The scheme came crashing down in 2018 when Social Security employees attempted to confirm Virginia’s status.
‘Ramo went to great lengths to conceal her theft and enjoy the benefits to which she was not entitled,’ said U.S. Attorney Byung J. ‘BJay’ Pak.
Dyann E. Ramo was convicted of one count of theft of government funds in May 2019 and has been ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $196,067, as well as perform 200 hours of community service and pay a $100 special assessment.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining the public trust in Social Security’s vital programs, according to Gail S. Ennis, Inspector General for the Social Security Administration.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Diane C. Schulman prosecuted the case. For further information, contact the U.S. Attorney’s Public Affairs Office at USAGAN.PressEmails@usdoj.gov or (404) 581-6016.
