$200,000 Woodstock Inn Heist: Pamela Smith Pleads Guilty

Pamela Smith, a 57-year-old woman from Barnard, has pleaded guilty to a charge of wire fraud in a Vermont court.

According to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont, Smith embezzled approximately $200,000 from the Shire Riverview Motel in Woodstock, Vermont, between 2007 and early 2013. The funds were embezzled through unauthorized checks, cash payments, and personal expenses.

Smith worked part-time as a clerk and performed bookkeeping services for the inn. She wrote checks to herself from the inn’s checking account, deposited them into her personal bank account, stole cash payments from guests, and used Shire Riverview funds to pay her personal expenses.

As part of her plea, Smith agreed to forfeit $40,000 in improvements to a house in Barnard and to pay a forfeiture money judgment in the full amount of the loss.

U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III released Smith on conditions pending sentencing, which has been set for July 8 in Brattleboro. Smith faces up to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000.

The case was investigated by the Woodstock Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Smith is represented by George Ostler, and the prosecutor is Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Waples.

Smith used about $40,000 in stolen funds to pay for improvements to a house in Barnard, a clear indication of her dishonest intentions.
