POCATELLO, ID – Caleb Sickinger, 45, of Rigby, Idaho, will spend the next nine years in federal prison after being sentenced for a depraved scheme involving the creation and distribution of altered child pornography. Acting U.S. Attorney Justin Whatcott announced the 108-month sentence today, bringing a measure of justice to a case riddled with deception and exploitation.
The case began in November 2023, with the arrest of an individual in Alabama on charges of coercion, enticement, and possession of child pornography. During questioning, the suspect revealed receiving the disturbing images from a “woman” in Idaho. Investigators quickly traced the communication to a social media profile, believing they had identified the source. However, when FBI agents in Idaho executed a search warrant at the woman’s Rigby residence, they found no evidence connecting her to the illicit material.
The investigation took a shocking turn when agents discovered the real perpetrator: Caleb Sickinger, a former police officer. Sickinger confessed to impersonating the woman online, using images scraped from her social media account without her knowledge or consent. But the depravity didn’t stop there. Sickinger didn’t simply *receive* images; he actively sought out pictures of a child on social media and then digitally altered them to *create* what he considered child pornography before sending them to the individual in Alabama. This wasn’t passive receipt—it was active, calculated abuse.
U.S. District Chief Judge David C. Nye didn’t stop at imprisonment. Sickinger will also face supervised release for the remainder of his life, and will be required to register as a sex offender. He pleaded guilty to the charge on April 8, 2025. The sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the lasting harm inflicted upon the victim. “This defendant victimized a child and her mother in committing this horrible crime,” Whatcott stated, underscoring the profound impact of Sickinger’s actions.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Pocatello office, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, the Idaho Falls Police Department, and the Idaho ICAC Task Force. Special Agent in Charge Mehtab Syed of the Salt Lake City FBI emphasized the devastating consequences of such crimes, stating, “Every image and video created and shared perpetuates the abuse of a child who will carry that trauma for the rest of their lives.” Attorney General Labrador added, “Idahoans are safer today because of their hard work and dedication to protecting our state.”
This case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Paskett prosecuted the case.
