TAMPA, FL – Mauricio Flores, 36, of Davenport, Florida, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted for possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The indictment, returned this week, alleges Flores knowingly possessed illicit content depicting the sexual abuse of children, a crime that carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.
According to court documents unsealed today, investigators executed a search warrant at Flores’s residence stemming from activity traced to a dark web site dedicated to the distribution of CSAM. The search yielded multiple devices belonging to Flores, and a subsequent forensic analysis revealed files containing CSAM stored on a cellphone. Federal authorities are now seeking to forfeit the cellphone, alleging it was used to facilitate the offense.
United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the indictment, emphasizing the gravity of the charges. “The exploitation of children is abhorrent and will not be tolerated,” Kehoe stated in a press release. “Our office, along with our partners at the FBI, are committed to relentlessly pursuing those who prey on the innocent and bringing them to justice.”
The investigation was spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose agents painstakingly tracked the online activity and secured the warrant. Assistant United States Attorney Muriel Moore will lead the prosecution, building a case against Flores based on the seized evidence and digital forensics. Sources within the FBI indicate the dark web site in question is a known hub for the distribution of particularly disturbing content.
This case is being prosecuted under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the escalating crisis of child sexual exploitation. The program focuses on coordinating federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to identify predators, rescue victims, and deliver justice. More information about Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.justice.gov/psc.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a declaration of guilt. Flores is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, the charges against him represent a significant escalation in the fight against online child exploitation, and the Grimy Times will continue to follow this case closely as it develops. The next court date for Flores has not yet been announced.
