CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A Texas man has been handed a stiff sentence for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation that spanned across the state. Elias Garcia, 35, a Brownsville resident, was sentenced to 82 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute more than four kilograms of cocaine.
Garcia pleaded guilty to the charges on November 30, 2023, and was subsequently ordered by U.S. District Judge David S. Morales to serve four years of supervised release after his prison term is complete.
According to court documents, Garcia attempted to drive a Jeep Cherokee SUV through the primary inspection lane of the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint on October 4, 2023. An X-ray scan of the vehicle revealed an anomaly in the battery compartment beneath the driver’s seat, prompting authorities to search the vehicle.
Inside the battery compartment, authorities discovered four bundles of cocaine with an estimated street value of over $200,000. The weight of the cocaine exceeded four kilograms, a significant quantity that suggests Garcia’s involvement in a larger trafficking operation.
Garcia will remain in custody until he is transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, a decision that will be made in the near future. The investigation into Garcia’s activities was conducted by the Border Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with Assistant U.S. Attorney John Marck prosecuting the case.
The sentence handed down to Garcia serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in cocaine trafficking. The operation, which spanned across Texas, highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat the flow of illicit substances into the state.
As Garcia begins his prison term, residents of Brownsville and beyond are left to wonder about the impact of his actions on their communities. The sentence handed down to Garcia is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in Texas and their commitment to protecting the public from the scourge of cocaine trafficking.
