Twenty-four members and associates of a notorious Jersey City street gang have been charged with a range of serious crimes, including conspiracy to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine, Hobbs Act robbery, and use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
The charges, announced by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger, were brought against members and associates of the Booker T street gang, which has been linked to violent crime and narcotics distribution in Jersey City.
The defendants, who are scheduled to appear in Newark federal court this afternoon, face a range of charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, and Hobbs Act robbery. Four defendants remain at large, and their identities have not been released.
“Street gangs that are allegedly engaged in violence and narcotics distribution drastically diminish quality of life for those who live in affected communities,” Sellinger said in a statement. “The charges in this case against 24 defendants demonstrate that, along with our law enforcement partners, we will work tirelessly to root out alleged gang-related criminality in order to make our communities safer.”
According to court documents, the defendants allegedly used violence and intimidation to distribute narcotics and commit robberies in Jersey City. The charges include conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine, as well as Hobbs Act robbery and use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
The defendants named in the charges include:
- Devon Jenkins, 27, of Jersey City, charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine
- Michael Davis, 29, of Jersey City, charged with Hobbs Act robbery and use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence
- Rashad Brown, 31, of Jersey City, charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances
- Kelly Johnson, 25, of Jersey City, charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine
The charges are the result of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the Jersey City Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies.
“The successful takedown of this criminal network and removal of violent actors from our community is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our law enforcement officers as well as the critical partnerships between the Jersey City Police Department and leading state and federal agencies in protecting public safety,” Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea said.
