MIAMI, FL – Twenty-six years vanished into thin air, but the long arm of the law finally caught up with Gustavo Falcon. The 56-year-old Miami man, accused of participating in a massive cocaine trafficking ring, made his initial appearance in U.S. Magistrate Court today, a quarter-century after a federal warrant was issued for his arrest.
Falcon, also known as “Taby,” is charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine valued at over $2.3 billion. He was indicted alongside lead defendants Augusto Falcon, a/k/a “Willie Falcon”, and Salvador Magluta in 1991, a case that sent shockwaves through South Florida. The multi-count indictment alleged a sophisticated operation flooding the streets with illicit narcotics. Falcon managed to stay one step ahead of authorities until April 12, 2017, when the U.S. Marshals Service finally apprehended him in Kissimmee, Florida.
“The passage of time does not lessen the government’s commitment to justice,” declared Acting United States Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg. “Those who are charged federally cannot evade the law. Today, after 26 years in hiding, Gustavo Falcon was brought forward to be held accountable in U.S. District Court for his criminal acts.” The government stipulated to Falcon’s detention pending trial, reserving the right to revisit that ruling. His next hearing is scheduled for May 11, 2007.
Adolphus P. Wright, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Miami Field Division, echoed that sentiment. “Even after 26 years of evading capture and prosecution, the DEA, along with our law enforcement partners, remain committed to following thru until justice is fully served on Falcon and others who violate the drug laws of the United States.” Falcon’s arrest marks the final apprehension of the ten defendants originally named in the 1991 indictment, bringing a decades-long saga to a potential close.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the DEA and the U.S. Marshals Service, highlights the persistence of federal law enforcement in pursuing even the most elusive fugitives. Greenberg specifically commended the investigative assistance of the DEA and extended thanks to the U.S. Marshals Service and the Miami-Dade Police Department for their role in Falcon’s capture. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher J. Clark and Michael Patrick Sullivan are prosecuting the case.
