OCALA, FL – Senior U.S. District Judge Wm. Terrell Hodges today sentenced Todd Shepard (49, Missouri) to an additional 15 years in federal prison for the brutal assault of two correctional officers at FCC-Coleman. Shepard’s attack on September 18, 2015, was a violent act that warranted this harsh penalty.
Shepard, who is currently serving a life sentence for murder and another term for drug distribution, pleaded guilty to charges of forcibly assaulting a federal officer while inflicting bodily injury and using a deadly weapon. The new sentence must be served consecutively with his existing sentences.
The facts presented during sentencing revealed that Shepard ambushed the officers with a sharpened piece of metal, shouting threats of violence before being subdued. His motive was to draw attention to the recent loss of prisoner recreation time. In an interview with federal agents after the incident, Shepard admitted to attacking the officers out of frustration.
Shepard is a three-time loser, having been convicted of murder and drug trafficking in addition to his assault on correctional officers. This sentence reinforces the severity of violent acts against those who work to protect inmates and maintain order within our correctional facilities.
The investigation into this case was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with Assistant United States Attorney Robert E. Bodnar, Jr., handling the prosecution.
