ST. LOUIS, MO – Kyle Maurice Parks, 54, of Columbus, Ohio, will spend the next 25 years in federal prison after being sentenced to 300 months for trafficking four minors – ages 15 to 17 – and two adults across state lines to force them into prostitution. The sentence was handed down after a four-day trial before United States District Court Judge John A. Ross.
The operation, laid bare during the trial, involved Parks transporting the victims from Columbus in a minivan on December 2, 2015. Their destination: the Red Roof Inn on Zumbehl Road in St. Charles, Missouri. The intent, prosecutors proved, was to exploit these vulnerable individuals by advertising their services on Backpage.com. Parks wasn’t offering a road trip; he was peddling people.
Testimony revealed a chilling pattern of control. Upon arrival, Parks ordered the victims to rest, only to rouse them hours later for a forced “preparation” – showers – before instructing them to create online ads soliciting sex acts for money. Victims, including a runaway, complied, answering calls and engaging in commercial sex, with Parks callously pocketing the majority of the earnings. It was a calculated scheme built on coercion and exploitation.
The scheme began to unravel when Columbus police, tracking the runaway’s phone, pinged her location to the St. Charles area. They alerted St. Charles police, who quickly spotted the minivan with Ohio temporary tags. A search of the motel rooms uncovered most of the victims. Parks, however, had already fled with a 17-year-old girl. He later returned to the police station, attempting to bail out one of the women – a transparent attempt to cover his tracks.
Officers found Parks and discovered a conscious, but incoherent, teenager in the van. He was immediately taken into custody. The jury ultimately convicted Parks in January 2017 on one count of sex trafficking of a minor, two counts of attempted sex trafficking of a minor, and six counts of interstate transportation with the intent to commit prostitution. The evidence was overwhelming.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, alongside the Columbus, Ohio Police Department, the St. Charles City and County Police Departments, St. Louis County Police Department, the Ohio State Attorney General’s Office, and the Social Security Administration OIG. Assistant United States Attorney Howard Marcus prosecuted the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, securing a sentence that, while not erasing the trauma inflicted, sends a clear message: trafficking humans carries severe consequences.
