Springfield Man Admits Role in Meth Pipeline

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Another cog in the methamphetamine machine has confessed. John R. Waits, 46, of Springfield, Missouri, pleaded guilty today to participating in a large-scale drug conspiracy that funneled meth from California directly into the heart of the Midwest. The guilty plea, entered before U.S. Magistrate Judge David P. Rush, marks a significant development in a case that has already seen one conspirator sentenced and another awaiting judgment.

The operation, active between June 1 and Sept. 11, 2015, centered around shipments of two to two-and-a-half pounds of methamphetamine sent from California to Lisa Renae Thompson, 39, of Springfield. Thompson, already sentenced to 11 years and three months in federal prison without parole, acted as the local receiver, picking up packages at various Springfield hotels. She then passed the drugs onto Michael E. Ford, 37, also of Springfield, who handled distribution. The financial flow was equally brazen: Ford handed Thompson $10,800 after a few days, of which she kept $800 and wired $10,000 back to the California source.

Waits’s involvement, as he admitted in court, was direct distribution. Thompson received approximately 24 pounds of methamphetamine, passing most of it to Ford, but also utilizing Waits to sell portions directly to customers – including an undercover agent on multiple occasions. The feds say Waits was involved for six weeks and is responsible for moving 12 pounds of the deadly drug. This wasn’t just about moving weight; it was about profit, and the devastation left in its wake.

Even after Thompson’s arrest on September 11, 2015, the supply line didn’t immediately stop. Ford continued receiving shipments from the California co-conspirator. The break came on September 30, 2015, when a FedEx employee flagged a suspicious 2.2-pound package. Springfield Police delivered the package directly to Ford at a Springfield residence, where he was promptly arrested – along with a Ruger .22-caliber handgun. The inclusion of a firearm underscores the violent potential inherent in these drug operations.

Waits now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison without parole, with the possibility of a life sentence. The final decision rests with the court, taking into account sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A presentence investigation will be conducted by the United States Probation Office before a sentencing hearing is scheduled. Assistant U.S. Attorney Abram McGull II is prosecuting the case, a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Springfield Police Department.

This case serves as a stark reminder that the methamphetamine trade continues to plague communities across the country, and those involved will face the full force of federal law. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to pursue any remaining co-conspirators and dismantle this dangerous network.
