HONOLULU – The grim streets of Pahoa, Hawaii, were shaken yesterday as Shannan Hostetler, 54, was apprehended and charged with a litany of serious offenses, including possession of methamphetamine and cocaine with intent to distribute. The Big Island resident is now staring down the barrel of life imprisonment if convicted.
United States Attorney Ken Sorenson revealed that Hostetler’s arrest followed a tip from the community alerting authorities about a known drug trafficker’s visits to his property, suspected of stashing illegal firearms, cash, and drugs. The tip triggered an operation that led to a spectacular raid by Homeland Security Investigations on June 24, 2025.
The search yielded an arsenal of weapons, including a Glock 43 handgun, multiple shotguns, and rifles, alongside large quantities of cocaine and crystal methamphetamine. The scene also suggested the presence of a clandestine meth lab. In a dramatic turn, FBI bomb-squad personnel from various agencies joined forces to clear the premises of suspected explosives.
Hostetler now faces life in prison if found guilty of the charges against him, which include possession with intent to distribute and manufacture methamphetamine, cocaine distribution, unlawful firearm possession, and explosives. His fate is yet to be decided by a United States District Judge, who will consider statutory sentencing factors and U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
Less than 24 hours after the initial sweep, an anonymous tipster delivered twenty more firearms to investigators, including assault rifles and tactical rifles with scopes and bipods, some loaded with extended magazines.
The case is being meticulously pursued by a team of federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations, FBI, ATF, and the Hawaii Police Department, with support from Maui and Kauai police departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan D. Slack is handling the prosecution.
