In a shocking revelation, over 600,000 individuals are released from federal and state prisons in Kansas each year, with nearly a quarter of Americans having had some encounter with the criminal justice system. The staggering statistics have sparked calls for improved reentry programs to help former prisoners reintegrate into society.
According to Tom Beall, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas, the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services offices in Kansas work tirelessly to assist people who have struggled with the laws and legal system. Probation officers offer substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, assistance finding housing or employment, and educational opportunities to those on probation or supervised release.
Beall joined U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch in inviting Kansans to observe National Reentry Week during April 24 through April 30. The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services offices in Kansas, along with the federal Bureau of Prisons, are committed to providing drug treatment, vocational training, and other programs aimed at reducing recidivism.
