MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – In a long-overdue chapter of justice, 75-year-old Jimcy McGirt of Holdenville, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for one count of Aggravated Sexual Abuse in Indian Country.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, McGirt pleaded guilty to the charge on December 5, 2023. As part of the plea agreement, McGirt confessed to sexually abusing a child in August of 1996.
“Today’s sentence closes a chapter on a perpetrator who has attempted to evade the legal consequences of his actions at every turn,” said United States Attorney Christopher J. Wilson. “For the victim, we hope it is but a beginning. To go into a courtroom—to fight to be heard and to be believed—that takes courage. To do so over three decades requires unimaginable fortitude of spirit. It is our hope the guilty plea and the sentence imposed bring some solace and comfort to those most effected by the defendant’s crimes.”
The Honorable John F. Heil, III, U.S. District Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, presided over the hearing. Assistant United States Attorneys Sarah McAmis and Kyra Jenner represented the United States.
For decades, McGirt had managed to evade justice for his heinous crime. But with the courage of the victim and the tireless efforts of law enforcement, McGirt’s reign of terror finally came to an end. The sentence handed down is a testament to the perseverance of those who fought for justice and a beacon of hope for those who have been silenced by perpetrators like McGirt.
As McGirt begins his 30-year sentence, the community can finally breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that a predator has been brought to justice. The sentence serves as a reminder that no matter how long it takes, justice will be served, and perpetrators will be held accountable for their crimes.
