ALBANY, NEW YORK – Victor M. Diaz, 29, of Johnstown, New York, is staring down a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to a serious drug charge. Diaz pled guilty yesterday to possessing and intending to distribute more than 100 grams of a deadly combination of heroin and fentanyl, a potent cocktail fueling the opioid crisis.
The bust went down on March 7, 2019, when agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and local law enforcement executed a federal warrant at Diaz’s Johnstown residence. They found Diaz home, alone, and sitting near a suitcase packed with poison – 1,740 small glassine bags containing approximately 89 grams of the heroin/fentanyl mixture. A subsequent search uncovered another 53.5 grams stashed in a plastic container, adding up to a substantial quantity of the dangerous drugs.
“This wasn’t a small-time operation,” stated a source close to the investigation. “We’re talking about enough heroin and fentanyl to put a serious dent in the community, and Diaz was clearly intending to profit from that destruction.” The announcement of the guilty plea came from United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith, DEA Special Agent in Charge Ray Donovan, and City of Amsterdam Police Chief Gregory J. Culick, signaling a unified front against the drug trade.
Diaz now faces a minimum of 5 years in prison, but the potential sentence extends all the way up to 40 years behind bars. He’ll also be subject to a term of post-imprisonment supervised release ranging from 4 years to life, ensuring continued monitoring even after he’s served his time. Senior United States District Judge Norman A. Mordue will hand down the final sentence on October 4, 2019, taking into account federal sentencing guidelines and the specifics of the case.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the DEA and the Amsterdam Police Department, with crucial support from the New York State Police and the Gloversville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett is prosecuting the case, building a solid legal foundation for the conviction. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who peddle poison in our communities will be held accountable.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing of Victor Diaz. This bust is just one battle in the ongoing war against drug trafficking, a war that demands relentless pursuit and unwavering commitment from law enforcement agencies across the country. The ripple effects of Diaz’s actions will likely be felt for years to come, underscoring the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic.
