Mason Neck, Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, South Dakota 2024

RAPID CITY — In a shocking turn of events, a Rapid City man has been sentenced to federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler handed down the sentence to Mason Neck, 35, on November 25, 2024.

Neck was convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact in 2019 and was required to register as a sex offender. However, in April 2024, he moved from his registered address but failed to update his registration. He was subsequently arrested in Rapid City on May 8, 2024.

As part of his sentence, Neck will serve one year and one day in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case against Neck was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project was launched in May 2006 and is led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section.

The U.S. Marshals Service investigated the case, with Senior Litigation Counsel Kirk Albertson prosecuting the case. Neck was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The sentence is a stark reminder of the importance of registering as a sex offender and updating that registration when circumstances change. It also highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies to hold offenders accountable for their actions.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicions of sex offender non-compliance to the authorities.
