GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A Texas man has received a severe sentence for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach when he assaulted law enforcement officers with a dangerous weapon.
Daniel Ray Caldwell, 51, of The Colony, Texas, was yesterday sentenced to 68 months in prison for assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a dangerous weapon—a felony charge. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, also includes three years of supervised release and orders $2,000 in restitution.
Caldwell’s actions on the day of the breach were particularly audacious. On Jan. 6, 2021, at around 2:05 p.m., Caldwell was among a group of rioters gathered at the Lower West Terrace area of the U.S. Capitol. He stepped forward and unleashed a chemical spray upon a line of law enforcement officers, causing chaos during an emergency session of Congress.
Caldwell’s arrest followed on Feb. 10, 2021, nearly two months after the breach. His case was handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, with significant assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas.
The investigation into Caldwell’s actions and those of his co-conspirators has been a collaborative effort between the FBI’s Dallas Field Office, the Washington Field Office, the Metropolitan Police Department, and the U.S. Capitol Police. Since Jan. 6, 2021, over 950 individuals have been arrested across nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach, including over 284 charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation into these events continues.
