Gena Michelle Hall, Tax Fraud, Mississippi 2024

Biloxi, Miss. – In a stark reminder of the perils of financial deceit, Gena Michelle Hall, 37, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for preparing fraudulent tax returns that resulted in over $231K in false refunds.

Hall, who was arraigned on February 9, 2023, before U.S. District Court Judge in Gulfport, was also ordered to pay $231,636.67 in restitution to the United States for her crimes.

According to court documents, Hall, a former employee of Tax Pros, a tax return preparation business in Gulfport, engaged in fraudulent activities from 2015 to 2019. She prepared federal income tax returns with false entries, knowing full well that these manipulations would lead the IRS to issue inflated refunds to her clients.

But Hall’s greed didn’t stop there; she also filed false returns for her own benefit, failing to report nearly $49,000 in tax preparation fees she received from Tax Pros’ bank account in 2017. This brazen act of financial chicanery not only exploited the trust placed in a tax preparer but also defrauded the U.S. Government.

“Today’s sentencing of Gena Michelle Hall underscores our commitment to hold tax preparers accountable for their actions,” said James E. Dorsey, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation, Atlanta Field Office. “Tax professionals are expected to adhere to the law and uphold the trust placed in them.”

The investigation into Hall’s activities was conducted by IRS-Criminal Investigation, with the case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stan Harris.
