EL PASO, Texas – In a ruthless turn of justice, Brennan Dane Short, a 49-year-old San Antonio man, has been sentenced to 132 months in federal prison for his role in the distribution of fentanyl-laced M-30 pills that resulted in the tragic death of an El Paso woman. The sentencing follows a thorough investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Short’s criminal enterprise reached its grim conclusion on March 21, 2023, when he sold counterfeit M-30 pills to an unsuspecting buyer in El Paso. The deadly package was mailed from a United States Postal Service location, setting off a chain of events that would lead to tragedy.
Just six days later, on March 27, the young woman was found lifeless at a local hotel. The subsequent autopsy by the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed a grim truth: she died from acute methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl toxicity, with the fentanyl being the decisive factor in her demise.
Short’s reign of terror came to an end on August 15, 2023, when he was arrested. On April 4, he pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of a controlled substance causing death or serious bodily injury, acknowledging his role in the woman’s death.
The U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza of the Western District of Texas announced the sentencing, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the justice served. Assistant U.S. Attorney Phillip Countryman prosecuted the case, ensuring that Short would be held accountable for his actions.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by fentanyl and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and keep communities safe. The DEA’s investigation into Short’s activities has once again demonstrated their commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting innocent lives from the scourge of illegal drugs.
