A Saginaw, Michigan man faces a 30-year prison term after being convicted of a litany of violent crimes including unlawful imprisonment, strangulation of an intimate partner, suffocation, interstate domestic violence, and witness tampering. The harrowing case unfolded on the Isabella Reservation in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
Michael Lee Johnson, 45, was sentenced by United States District Judge Linda Parker following a jury conviction on November 1, 2024. Gorgon Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, announced the sentence, which stems from a brutal attack on his girlfriend, who also happens to be an Indian.
The evidence at trial depicted Johnson’s relentless abuse and manipulation. After she broke up with him, Johnson violated his parole by staying at the home. Upon her return, he sent a chilling message stating, ‘I wanna do something evil.’ Johnson then launched into a violent spree, throwing his girlfriend against a wall and straining her to the point of difficulty breathing.
His violence didn’t stop there; Johnson also attacked the victim in front of their children. The following evening, he held her captive in a bedroom. In an attempt to cover up his actions, Johnson tampered with witnesses in various ways.
The investigation was led by the Saginaw Chippewa Police Department and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Roy Kranz and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Turkelson prosecuted the case.
This sentence sends a clear message that violence on Native American reservations will not be tolerated, as federal law enforcement continues to crack down on crimes committed within these communities.
