SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – In a grim turn of events, Win Naing, 20, from Utica, New York, faced federal court yesterday on serious allegations of receiving and possessing child pornography. The charges were announced by Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the FBI.
The complaint reveals that a cloud storage service flagged the upload of child pornography to its platform in 2023, leading the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to notify investigators. Through geolocation data associated with the internet protocol address, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office pinpointed Naing as the suspect. A search of his cellular telephone uncovered a trove of child pornography images and videos.
Agents also discovered that some of the material was downloaded via a social networking app on Naing’s phone. The charges against him carry a sentence of 5 to 20 years in federal prison, fines up to $250,000, a supervised release term of at least 5 years, and sex offender registration upon release.
Naing made his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Thérèse Wiley Dancks in Syracuse and was detained pending further proceedings. Acting U.S. Attorney Sarcone emphasized the gravity of Naing’s crimes: “Collecting child pornography is not a victimless crime, and the defendant will suffer the consequences of his actions.” FBI Agent Tremaroli added that the FBI remains dedicated to pursuing such predators.
The charges are accusations, and Naing is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The case is being investigated by the FBI and Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian S. LaRochelle prosecuting it under Project Safe Childhood.
Project Safe Childhood is a nationwide effort to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse through federal, state, and local resources. For more information on this initiative, visit here.
