Tyrone Williams, First-Degree Felony Murder, Washington District of Columbia 2020

Tyrone Williams, 52, a Washington DC resident, has been found guilty of first-degree felony murder and attempted robbery of a senior citizen in a brutal mid-day attack in Northeast Washington.

According to the government’s evidence, on March 29, 2020, at 11:45 a.m., 81-year-old Bobby Poole Jr. was walking home from a convenience store when he was knocked down by Williams and a second unknown assailant in the 900 block of Eastern Avenue NE. The two men went through Poole’s pockets and he suffered brain injuries after hitting his head on a metal fence during the robbery.

Poole died on May 6, 2020, from complications of blunt force trauma to the head. Surveillance video from the convenience store shows Williams had been casing Poole and the store, following him afterwards. A civilian witness, who had just run into Williams at the store, saw Williams and the second assailant fleeing the area where Poole was found.

Williams was located at the convenience store afterwards and identified through surveillance video. He was arrested on March 29, 2020, and has been in custody ever since.

Williams faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for the crimes. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert J. Contee III commended the work of those who investigated the case, including Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gauri Gopal, Chimnomnso Kalu, and Daniel Lenerz, and other investigators and prosecutors.

The jury’s verdict marked a significant milestone in the case, bringing justice to the family and friends of Bobby Poole Jr. The case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of violent crime on our community.
