BOSTON – In a move that’s likely to send shockwaves through Massachusetts’ streets, 32-year-old Kenneth Veiga of Abington pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute oxycodone pills in federal court.
Veiga’s plea deal marks a significant victory for law enforcement, who have been cracking down on the growing opioid epidemic in the state. According to court documents, Veiga was involved in an oxycodone trafficking organization that operated between November 2022 and May 2023. During this time, intercepted communications revealed that Veiga and his co-conspirators were distributing the highly addictive pills to others.
investigators seized a stash of oxycodone pills, as well as a polymer-80 9 mm pistol and commercially manufactured ammunition from Veiga’s previous residence in July 2023. A separate search of his current apartment turned up even more evidence, including fentanyl pills, oxycodone pills, and a whopping $58,000 in cash.
Veiga’s charge of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute oxycodone pills carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, at least three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million. Sentencing is scheduled for July 18, 2024, before U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper.
The investigation into Veiga’s oxycodone conspiracy was a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Massachusetts State Police, and Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. Mulcahy of the Narcotics & Money Laundering Unit is prosecuting the case.
As part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, Veiga’s case is just one example of the long arm of the law reaching into the dark corners of the opioid trade.
