SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – In a shocking turn of events, Jason P. Benedict, a 47-year-old man from Auburn, New York, has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
The crime was committed on January 21, 2023, when Benedict transferred a 20-gauge shotgun to another person in Syracuse. The shotgun, along with drugs, cash, and drug paraphernalia, was seized during the execution of a search warrant at the other person’s residence in June 2023.
A search of telephone text messages revealed that Benedict had previously possessed and delivered the shotgun to the other person. In court, Benedict admitted that he knew he was previously convicted in 2011 in Onondaga County Court of Criminal Sex Act in the Second Degree, a felony for which he was sentenced to serve five years in prison.
The United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Southwick is prosecuting the case.
Benedict faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00, and a term of post-incarceration supervised release of up to 3 years. Sentencing is scheduled for August 23, 2024, in Syracuse.
The other person involved in the case is charged with federal firearms and drug felony offenses and is currently pending in federal court. He is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
This case is a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking federal laws. Benedict’s actions have put him and others at risk, and now he must face the music. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
