Illicit Return: Guatemalan Man Sentenced to Prison
A Guatemalan man who made the fateful decision to re-enter the United States after being deported was met with the full force of the law. Adan Gomez-Juarez, a 25-year-old from Sioux City, Iowa, has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for his actions.
According to reports, Gomez-Juarez had been removed from the country in 2020 but saw fit to return. His decision was met with swift consequences when he was arrested on August 28, 2024, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Sioux City after being detained by local police for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI).
The case against Gomez-Juarez unfolded in the United States District Court in Sioux City, where he pleaded guilty on October 24, 2024, to one count of illegal re-entry. In his plea, Gomez-Juarez admitted to knowingly re-entering the country without proper authorization.
U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand delivered the sentence, handing Gomez-Juarez a 12-month prison term. The defendant will also be required to serve a three-year term of supervised release upon completion of his prison sentence.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Fletcher, who worked closely with the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau to bring the defendant to justice.
