Cedar Rapids Man Sentenced to Federal Prison After Pleading Guilty to Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
A 26-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon. Robert Shawn Griffin, of Cedar Rapids, was sentenced on May 22, 2025, in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
According to court documents, Griffin admitted to being previously convicted of multiple felony offenses. Evidence presented at the sentencing hearing revealed that Griffin committed several firearm-related offenses in 2024. These incidents include firing a firearm at a residential house in February 2024, pointing a firearm at another individual at a storage facility in March 2024, and attempting to steal an ATV while possessing a firearm in rural Center Point, Iowa, in April 2024.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community. The program brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to foster trust and legitimacy, support violence prevention efforts, and set strategic enforcement priorities.
Griffin was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams to 64 months’ imprisonment. He will also serve a three-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Griffin is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Jared Manternach and investigated by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
