Adante Leshaun Dupree, Credit Union Fraud and Aggravated Identity Theft, Virginia 2024

Adante Leshaun Dupree, 25, of Chesapeake, Virginia, was convicted today by a federal jury on charges of credit union fraud and aggravated identity theft in a scheme to rip off Navy Federal Credit Union. The verdict closes the book on a calculated con that exploited stolen identities, the darkweb, and impersonators to siphon auto loans from one of the nation’s largest military financial institutions.

Court records reveal Dupree and his co-conspirators bought stolen identities of out-of-state victims via the darkweb. Using those identities, they opened accounts at Navy Federal Credit Union and applied for auto loans in the victims’ names. The fraud didn’t stop at paperwork—Dupree arranged for a woman to impersonate the victims, retrieve loan checks, and cash them at a check-cashing store in Norfolk, Virginia. The operation ran on deception, but it began to collapse under its own absurdity.

The scheme crumbled when the female impersonator tried to cash a second loan check while wearing a wig to pass as a victim decades older than her actual age. Surveillance footage and teller suspicion flagged the transaction, triggering a full investigation. Bank records and digital forensics tied Dupree directly to the conspiracy, including communications with co-conspirators and coordination of payouts.

Dupree now faces a maximum of 30 years in prison for credit union fraud and a mandatory consecutive two-year sentence for aggravated identity theft. Sentencing is scheduled for September 19 before U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen. While federal sentences often fall below the maximum, the mandatory minimum ensures Dupree will serve significant time behind bars.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew Bosse and Daniel T. Young. G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement alongside top federal and local law enforcement: Michael K. Lamonea of ICE Homeland Security Investigations, Ashan M. Benedict of ATF’s Washington Field Division, and Norfolk Police Chief Larry D. Boone. All credited the takedown to interagency coordination.

Investigative support came in part from the Virginia Army National Guard Counter Drug Task Force. Court documents, including Case No. 2:18-cr-172-2, are available through the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and PACER. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has posted a full press release on its website.
