DES MOINES, Iowa – In a chilling testament to the digital danger faced by children, Adel resident Douglas Harsh was sentenced on Friday, September 5, 2025, to 108 months in federal prison for the heinous crime of transporting child pornography.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was alerted by a CyberTip that led law enforcement to Harsh’s residence. A search there uncovered electronic devices containing graphic material of child sexual abuse. The investigation revealed Harsh was an active member in an online chat group where explicit content involving prepubescent children was traded.
Upon completing his prison term, Harsh will be subject to a seven-year supervised release, and the federal system offers no parole for such offenses. He has also been ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution. The U.S. Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa disclosed these details.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with support from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation Internet Crimes Against Children and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. It is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide effort to combat child sexual exploitation launched in 2006 by the DOJ. The initiative coordinates federal, state, and local efforts to apprehend predators who exploit children online and rescue victims.
