George Ostertag, Felon in Possession of Firearm, Wyoming 2024

RAWLINS, WYOMING — George Ostertag, a 38-year-old resident of Rawlins, has been sentenced to an 18-month prison term followed by three years of supervised release for his role as a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson during a hearing in Cheyenne.

On January 24, 2024, Ostertag was stopped for a traffic violation and flagged by a K9 unit that detected the presence of controlled substances. During a subsequent search, law enforcement discovered a 9mm pistol with an obliterated serial number hidden between the driver’s seat and the center console. According to court documents, Ostertag had previously been convicted of a felony, making him legally barred from possessing a firearm.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation that led to Ostertag’s arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Hammer was assigned to prosecute the case. The defendant was indicted on May 16, 2024, and pleaded guilty on June 17, 2025.

BARROW, WYOMING — Barry Joe Barrera, a 41-year-old man from Casper, has been sentenced to 152 months’ imprisonment with four years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, distribution of methamphetamine, and use of a firearm in relation to drug trafficking. The ruling was announced by U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson at a hearing held on September 11.

The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation began their investigation into Barrera in December 2024 after suspecting him of distributing methamphetamine. During the probe, agents conducted controlled purchases and observed Barrera traveling between Colorado and Wyoming to replenish his drug supply. On January 9, 2025, a pursuit ensued after a traffic stop where a bag of meth was tossed out of the vehicle by fleeing suspects.

JUAN GUANAJUATO, MEXICO — Juan Olvera-Venegas, 35, from Guanajuato, Mexico, has been sentenced to an 18-month prison term followed by deportation for illegal re-entry into the United States. Chief U.S. District Court Judge Kelly H. Rankin imposed the sentence on September 11 in Cheyenne. Olvera-Venegas was arrested in Goshen County for possession of a controlled substance and found to have a lengthy criminal record.
