FORT WAYNE, IN – Adrian L Johnson, 50, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after pleading guilty to trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing firearms. U.S. District Court Judge Holly A. Brady handed down the 180-month sentence yesterday, followed by an eight-year supervised release.
The bust originated from a routine traffic stop. Back in October 2022, Johnson was pulled over for driving with expired registration. But a K-9 unit quickly turned the stop into something far more serious, alerting officers to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.
A search of Johnson’s car revealed a veritable one-stop shop for illegal activity. Officers seized a smoking device, 42 grams of methamphetamine, and 10 grams of a deadly mixture of methamphetamine and fentanyl. They also recovered two firearms, one of which had its serial number deliberately obliterated – a clear attempt to hide its origins. A digital scale and $1,678 in cash were also found.
The investigation, a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with support from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, painted a picture of Johnson as a small-time dealer peddling poison in the Fort Wayne area. The obliterated serial number on one of the guns raised concerns about its potential involvement in other crimes.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Ecenbarger prosecuted the case, securing the lengthy sentence. While 180 months won’t undo the damage caused by Johnson’s actions, it does take a dangerous criminal off the streets and sends a message that drug trafficking and illegal gun possession will not be tolerated.
Johnson’s case is a grim reminder of the ongoing opioid crisis and the link between drug trafficking and firearms violence. The Grimy Times will continue to follow federal cases like this, exposing the underbelly of crime and holding offenders accountable.
