Adys Sanchez, 46, Arrested in Miami Beach for Aggravated Identity Theft in Boston
In a shocking turn of events, a Dominican national has been taken into custody in Miami Beach, Florida, for misusing a Social Security number and committing aggravated identity theft. The defendant, Adys Sanchez, 46, is facing serious charges that could land her behind bars for up to five years.
According to the indictment, Sanchez falsely represented that a Social Security number belonging to another person was her own when she applied for a driver’s license renewal at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles in April 2014. The indictment further alleges that Sanchez committed aggravated identity theft by using the Social Security number of another person.
The charges against Sanchez are serious, with the indictment stating that false representation of a Social Security number provides for a sentence of no greater than five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater. The charge of aggravated identity theft carries a mandatory two-year sentence that must run consecutively to any other sentence, one year of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
The investigation into Sanchez’s activities was a collaborative effort between the United States Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Department of State, the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General, and the Massachusetts State Police. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Burzycki is prosecuting the case.
The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Sanchez is currently being held in federal custody until her case is resolved.
The case against Sanchez serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our personal information and the severe consequences of identity theft. As the investigation continues, it is likely that more information will come to light about Sanchez’s activities and the extent of her alleged crimes.
Sanchez is scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami today at 2pm, where she will face the charges against her. The outcome of the case remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the consequences of identity theft are serious and can have far-reaching impacts on the victims.
