New YORK – A landmark victory for New York’s tough gun laws came today as Attorney General Letitia James successfully defended the state’s restrictions on firearms in Times Square and public transit systems. In a decisive ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld these measures, rejecting challenges to the Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA).
The CCIA, a cornerstone of New York’s gun control efforts, bans concealed carry in sensitive areas like Times Square and aboard public transit. Today’s decision followed a successful defense by AG James on other key provisions of the CCIA, ensuring that these vital public safety measures remain intact.
‘New Yorkers deserve to feel safe on public transportation and everywhere in our state,’ James stated. ‘Today’s ruling affirms that right. Common-sense gun laws save lives, keep guns out of sensitive community spaces, and help address the gun violence crisis. My office will continue to defend these laws to protect New Yorkers.’
The appeals court’s decision followed a challenge in Frey v. City of New York, which sought to invalidate the CCIA provisions concerning Times Square and public transit. The court’s affirmation of these restrictions came as no surprise to legal experts, who have long supported New York’s stringent gun control measures.
New York has been at the forefront of the national gun debate, with AG James leading the charge in defending its strict gun laws. This victory sends a strong message that common-sense gun regulation is essential for public safety and will not be easily overturned.
