AIMA Business and Medical Support, LLC, Medicare Fraud, Florida 2018

A Miami-based medical billing and compliance company, AIMA Business and Medical Support, LLC, has been accused of Medicare fraud in a complaint filed by the United States under the False Claims Act.

The company, registered as a Florida limited liability company, allegedly submitted or caused the submission of false claims to Medicare for medically unnecessary genetic laboratory tests. AIMA provided medical billing and compliance services in the United States, including billing the Medicare Program on behalf of healthcare providers and suppliers.

The United States contends that from August 2018 through August 2019, AIMA billed Medicare Part B approximately $15,178,946.00 for genetic tests on behalf of a Miami-based diagnostic laboratory called Excellent Laboratories Inc., which did business as Selecta Laboratory (Selecta).

Aaron Liston, CEO of AIMA, was based in the United Kingdom, while AIMA’s employees were based in India. The company provided services to customers in the United States, including billing Medicare on behalf of healthcare providers and suppliers.

The government’s complaint alleges that AIMA knew or should have known that the tests were not medically necessary and were not ordered by the beneficiary’s treating physician. Medicare does not cover the costs of genetic tests that are not reasonable and necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of illness.

The investigation and prosecution of this matter illustrate the government’s emphasis on combating healthcare fraud. The False Claims Act is a powerful tool in this effort, allowing the government to recover damages and penalties from those who submit false claims to federal healthcare programs.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Clarissa Pinheiro is handling the matter, with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), conducting the investigation.
