Air Force Vet Charged in Wife Abuse
A chilling case of domestic violence has unfolded in Sacramento, California, with the arrest of a former Air Force member accused of sexually abusing and assaulting his wife while stationed abroad. Christopher Mroz, 23, of Sacramento, was taken into custody at his residence on a set of federal charges.
According to court documents, Mroz was a member of the Air Force stationed in Lakenheath, England from 2012 through 2014. Although he was discharged in 2014, he remained on base with his wife, who was an active duty member of the Air Force. The indictment alleges that during the course of their time in England, Mroz forcibly raped his wife and, on another occasion, broke her arm.
The alleged offenses took place under the jurisdiction of the Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act of 2000. This law allows the US government to prosecute crimes committed by members of the US Armed Forces abroad. If convicted, Mroz faces a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the FBI led the investigation into Mroz’s alleged crimes. Assistant United States Attorneys Jill Thomas and Michele Beckwith are handling the prosecution. Mroz is scheduled to appear in court today at 2:00 p.m. before US Magistrate Judge Kendall J. Newman.
The case highlights the dark reality of domestic violence, a pervasive issue that affects far too many families. As we await the outcome of this case, we urge anyone affected by domestic violence to seek help and support.
Mroz is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. His arraignment marks the beginning of a complex and sensitive process that will require careful consideration and attention to detail.
We will continue to monitor this case and provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, our thoughts are with the victim and their loved ones, as they navigate this difficult and trying time.
