CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Sharief Rayshaun El-Amin, 25, of Akron, was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for his role in transporting methamphetamine into West Virginia, according to United States Attorney Mike Stuart.
In a statement, Attorney Stuart emphasized the severe impact of drug trafficking on local communities. "Five pounds of meth and heroin, not to mention a gun – too many poison peddlers have destroyed the lives of too many good West Virginians," he said. "We are working closely with all federal, state, and local law enforcement teams to protect our citizens from these deadly drugs. Our focus is on our citizens, and we have their backs. The results are unprecedented in West Virginia’s history."
El-Amin was apprehended following a traffic stop on May 27, 2019, along Interstate 77 in Jackson County. During the stop, officers detected an odor of marijuana, leading to the deployment of a police K-9 that indicated the presence of controlled substances. Authorities discovered more than five pounds of methamphetamine, approximately one ounce of heroin, and a loaded semi-automatic pistol in the vehicle’s trunk.
El-Amin confessed that he was paid $400 to drive from Akron to Charleston, though he admitted to not knowing the precise nature of the cargo. The DEA Mid-Atlantic Laboratory confirmed that the methamphetamine was 96% pure. El-Amin will also serve five years of supervised release following his prison term.
The investigation was conducted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). United States District Judge Irene C. Berger imposed the sentence, with Assistant United States Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe and former Assistant United States Attorney Ryan A. Saunders handling the prosecution.
